a list that says nothing really

(i wrote this almost a week ago, but didn't have a chance to publish it. which is why some of the dates and such are off....)

so, apparently i took the summer off.
an unplanned vacation from the blog.
i kind of left some things hanging after the last post, i think (in fact, i know....because i had a friend email me the other day and ask me about it).
and there are other things i could write about.
but i'm ignoring all of that right now because i don't feel like writing that post. eventually i will come back to it. maybe next time.

so you're getting this instead.
a post of random things.
here goes.

1. i went to the audubon zoo and butterfly garden today (for free!!) someone on campus had a ticket they couldn't use, and i had a friend who had one that expired this weekend so we went to the zoo!

this elephant kept following me when i would move...she was fun!
the daddy orangutan was HUGE!
the lion statue -- maybe part of me was
pretending it was Aslan from narnia :)

2. last night, i picked up my last tips from starbucks. and decided to walk through target. which should never be done. you never just walk through target. i went to the cheap movies to see if there was anything worth $5 (there always is), but turned around and saw this:

that's right. the rolling stone classic rock/mo-town/decade collections. where i spent several minutes debating what to do. movies? music? both? ugh, decisions. and i walked out of the store with the early rock collection and one of the motown collections. my parents should be proud. their music (which, i'd like to add, my sister and i also grew up with, so technically i could call it "our" music) won over the movies.

3. i have realized that though i enjoy watching college football, i often don't have any idea what is going on. i can tell you the basics (maybe). but when i'm not watching the game with other people? no idea how the game is going outside of the score. i know this because i'm watching the uga/mizzou game and all i can tell you is that uga just scored so mizzou is only 1 point ahead and not 7. (but we won at the end of the game!! gooo dawgs!)

4. i really like the blonde oreos better than the original ones.

5. though isaac threw everything out of whack this semester, i'm super glad he came and caused us to take a whole week off because it meant i got to go back to atlanta for an extra week. though when time came to drive back to nola, i wasn't completely sure i wanted to (because going back meant lots of class, work, homework) .

6. i'm taking greek this semester. for fun. what am i thinking?

7. a question/situation i've been pondering: how do you say something to someone when you feel like their words/actions/attitudes are not appropriate in a way that doesn't come off judgmental, doesn't make it sound like you never struggle with it, and doesn't make future interactions awkward? especially when you see said person/people a lot?

8. i'm really looking forward to this upcoming movie season. especially in december. why? the first hobbit movie, the great gatsby, anna karenina, and les miserable all come out in theaters that month.

9. i'm getting a haircut on monday and i don't think i've looked forward to a haircut this much in a long time. (addition: i'm so glad i got it cut. i really love long hair, but it was time for it to be a little different...)

10. i'm super ready for fall. we're almost there. just another week or two and it'll be officially fall. sadly, here in nola, it'll be another month (but hopefully not) before it really begins to feel like fall.

11. i used to take pictures more than i do now (and other things, but that's one of those other posts i don't want to write today). i think i'm going to try to change that.

12. among other things i've realized lately, when i'm just cooking for myself, i'm far more likely to eat cereal or chips and salsa for meals. or applesauce. or handi-snacks. sometimes i'll throw in some pasta. or pop-tarts. basically, though i love cooking, it's a good bet that i'll eat something that probably doesn't actually count as a meal.

13. i've almost paid for my trip to rome in the spring! only $600 left to pay for travel and most food....then just saving for other things! so glad God's given me this opportunity.

14. holiday/special event themed things in stores are designed for people like me. i love it all. football shaped ritz crackers. cookies with pictures in them. holiday marshmallows. decorations. reeses eggs (and pumpkins, turkeys, and trees). charlie brown specials on video. i turned the corner in target yesterday and saw the halloween section mostly together and almost shrieked with happiness. and left the store with ghostly window gel clings :) however, i did recently see/hear about candy corn m&ms and oreos....and i'm not sure how i feel about that....

15. found out about voxer recently. and now i'm able to talk with friends who are all over like it's a walkie-talkie. plus, multiple friends who all live in different places can talk at the same time, like 3-way calling!

i think that's enough for tonight.
looking at this screen for so long (and so often now that school's back in session) is giving me a headache. or maybe it's that i had one of those not-really-supper suppers :)

lots of love, friends!

His Straight, Not Mine

Whenever I have a huge decision to make, I stress. My default mode is "what if I'm wrong??" This has been true for the last 10+ years of my life. College, mission trips during college, where to teach after college, quitting teaching, moving to Baltimore, leaving Baltimore, beginning seminary. All decisions fraught with questions, doubts, fears. And I'm there again. Graduated from seminary, looking for the next step. Wondering. Doubting. Questioning. Hoping. Dreaming. Fearing.  Every big decision is the same. You'd think I'd have learned by now just to decide or jump or trust or whatever. But no. The reason for this struggle is that I so badly long to do what I am meant to do. I long to follow God where He is leading, to fulfill the purpose He has planned for me from the beginning. But I'm only human. And so how on earth do I know what God has planned for me? And how on earth can I possibly do that without screwing it up completely?  I look at vers...

34.

One of the things I love most about my birthday is that it falls so close to the beginning of the year. A new calendar year and new life year start together.  I also love that I share a birthday with Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.  You know, the important things.  I've thought a lot about this year and what it would be like. Not because I've now officially hit my mid-30's (oh my goodness, really??) but what will 2019 and 34 hold? The last two years have been the hardest I've faced. Everything felt like it was breaking to pieces, and I was never fast enough to gather them all up before they landed, or good enough to keep everything together. These pieces were significant chunks of my identity. Things (and people!) I had placed a lot of value in, that I thought defined me, were gone. Slowly, suddenly, systematically, chaotically. It felt very much like I was being stripped away, and that there wasn't much else there.  At the same time, the world also se...

movies

i love movies. could watch them all the time. as i've had some more time on my hands lately, i've seen a lot of movies on random channels that have made me say, "i love this movie! why don't i own it??" so here's a list of movies i feel like i should own, or want to own when they come out. *the man in the iron mask *10 things i hate about you *penelope *catch me if you can *sweet home alabama *phantom of the opera *the count of monte cristo *despicable me *how to train your dragon *streetcar named desire *gone with the wind *pride and prejudice (the really long, bbc one -- not the kiera knightley one) *the pirates movies *the bourne movies *grease just to name a few :)
